What Is ÜOMG and How Do You Calculate It?

If you study at a university in Azerbaijan, you will hear one abbreviation again and again: ÜOMG — ümumi orta müvəffəqiyyət göstəricisi, or overall average achievement score. It is the Azerbaijani equivalent of a GPA, and it is calculated on a 100-point scale.

How a course score is formed

Under the credit system, every course is scored out of 100 points. According to the Ministry of Education's regulation on assessing students in the credit system (Order No. 1060), half of the points come from your work during the semester and half from the final exam:

  • up to 50 points for the exam;
  • up to 10 points for attendance and 10 for independent work;
  • up to 20 points for seminars or labs and 10 for a course paper (if there is no course paper, its points go to seminars or labs).

The final score for the course is then converted to a grade:

PointsGradeMeaning
91–100AExcellent (əla)
81–90BVery good (çox yaxşı)
71–80CGood (yaxşı)
61–70DFair (kafi)
51–60ESatisfactory (qənaətbəxş)
below 51FFail (qeyri-kafi)

The ÜOMG formula

ÜOMG is not a simple average. Each course score is weighted by its credits, so a 6-credit course counts twice as much as a 3-credit one:

ÜOMG = Σ(course score × credits earned) ÷ Σ(credits in the curriculum)

There is an important detail here. If you fail a course, you do not earn its credits — so that course adds zero to the top of the fraction, while its credits still count at the bottom. A failed course therefore pulls your ÜOMG down sharply until you retake it.

A worked example

CourseCreditsScoreScore × credits
Mathematics685510
Economics578390
English492368
History370210
Total18—1,478

ÜOMG = 1,478 ÷ 18 = 82.11. A simple average of the four scores would be 81.25 — the credits make a real difference. ÜOMG is cumulative: it is calculated over one semester, then two, three and so on.

Why ÜOMG matters

  • Your diploma: ÜOMG is included in the diploma supplement, and employers often use it as a selection criterion. Students with a high ÜOMG ("very good" and "excellent") are placed on the rector's honour list.
  • Student loans: under the state education loan scheme, students with a standard loan pay no interest for a semester in which their ÜOMG is 91 or higher, and those who keep it at 91+ in every semester have 25% of the loan written off. For social loans, the no-interest threshold is 71 and the write-off is 50% (Student Loan Fund).
  • Internships: many programmes set a minimum — for example, the State Tax Service's 2026 summer internship required an ÜOMG above 80 points (taxes.gov.az). Browse current internship programmes on Hesabla.
