How to Calculate GPA: Complete Guide for Students!

In order to see the effort that students put into their studies throughout their academic lives, and to properly understand the academic performance of students, we need to understand how the GPA is calculated. Therefore, we can say that the GPA is an indicator that shows the average of annual or semester grades for all subjects. The purpose of this system is to activate teaching activities, create a self-control mechanism, and evaluate their achievements in teaching.

In many universities in Azerbaijan, the assessment is carried out using a 0-100 point system. At the end of the course, the student receives a score out of 100 points, and this score is usually associated with a letter grade or achievement level. Here is a point that we need to be careful about, when calculating the GPA, not only the score we get from the course is not enough, but we also need to take into account its credit. The reason for this is quite simple, the impact of a 6-credit course on the average is not the same as the impact of a 2-credit course.

So how is the GPA calculated? We multiply the grade we get from each course by the credit of that course, then we add up the results we get, then we calculate how much credit our total courses have and divide the result we got earlier by the accumulated credit. (GPA = Total (Grade x Credit) / Total Credit Number)

The biggest advantage of this system is that this system evaluates students in the most fair way. Even if a student gets a very high grade in a course with a low credit, this result does not have a very serious impact. At first glance, this does not seem so fair. After all, how can a student get a high score, put in so much effort, but in the end the impact is not serious at all and this system is evaluated as fair. You can think of the answer to this question as follows, just as a high grade from a low-credit course does not affect you that much, a low grade from a high-credit course does not affect you that much, because the cost of the course is already quite high and the low grade you get will have the same effect as the cost of a high-credit course.

In other words, we can say that the GPA is an indicator that shows the average of annual or semester grades for all subjects. Also, the GPA indicator plays an important role not only during the education period, but also in the subsequent stages. If you are a Bachelor's student, for the Master's degree; If you are a Master's student, for the Doctorate degree, the GPA plays an important role. Sometimes it even plays a role in your working life.

The system, which is evaluated out of 100 in Azerbaijan, is especially convenient for showing the exact score of students. Let's imagine that a student who gets 85 and a student who gets 90 are shown in the "Good result" category, but in Azerbaijan, the student's exact score is displayed rather than the category to which he belongs. Thus, this system plays an important role for students studying in Azerbaijan for factors such as submitting documents for scholarships, exchange programs, and evaluation during graduation.

In other countries, this system is slightly different, students such as AA, BA, BB have a grade, each grade has a certain impact on the average and you can think of that impact like this, let's imagine that the AA grade has a score of 4.0 and that 4.0 score is added to the credit of that course, for example, 6 credits. Thus, 4 x 6 = 24 points affect that average. These grades such as AA and BA are also organized on the basis of grades between 0-100. So, to understand this system more clearly, you can look at the following table:

Let's give an example to make our idea clearer, A student gets an AA grade in a 3-credit course, a BB grade in a 4-credit course, and finally, a CC grade in a 2-credit course. In this case, our calculation is as follows: 4.0 x 3 = 12; 3.0 x 4 = 12; 2.0 x 2 = 4. As you can see, the high grade he got in the 3-credit course had the same effect as the low grade he got in the 4-credit course. In our calculation, we have a total of 28 points and 9 credits. Now, let's do our final calculation, 28 / 9, and our result is = 3.11. After all, what does 3.11 mean? This is the student's GPA, which is the same as the 4.0 system. In many universities in Azerbaijan, however, the system is based on a 100-point scale, so a different score is usually given.

As mentioned earlier, in some countries, a 0-100 score, grade (letter grade), and GPA are used together. In Turkey, North America, some universities in Europe, and in international programs, a student's 100-point grade may first be converted to a letter grade and then to a 4.0 factor or another system.

As a result, calculating the GPA/GPA is a key skill for understanding a student's academic standing. While the 0-100 point system in Azerbaijan provides a detailed picture of a student's performance, international GPA systems interpret this indicator using letter grades, credits, and factors. Whether it's a GPA or a GPA, an accurate calculation requires three pieces of information: course grade, course credit, and the applicable grading system. The GPA Calculator combines these pieces of information to provide the student with a clear, fast, and reliable result. This allows the student to not only see their past performance, but also set more informed academic goals for the upcoming semester.
