France is moving to speed up a new security bill after violent scenes followed Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory celebrations.

According to Reuters, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said he would ask President Emmanuel Macron to call an extraordinary parliamentary session in early July. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of the government’s RIPOST security bill.

The move came after celebrations in Paris turned chaotic following PSG’s Champions League win. France’s interior ministry said more than 200 people were injured and one person died during the unrest.

The proposed RIPOST bill targets what the government calls “everyday disorder,” including the misuse of fireworks, illegal parties, drug use, and other public safety issues. It would also expand some police and surveillance powers.

The violence has created political pressure on the French government. Supporters of the bill argue that stronger measures are needed to prevent disorder during major public events, while critics may raise concerns about civil liberties and expanded policing powers.

For France, the debate comes at a sensitive time. With major sports and cultural events continuing to draw huge crowds, public safety has become a major political issue.
